Filmmaker-actor Gautham Vasudev Menon recently courted controversy when he said that films about discrimination based on caste should no longer be made in this day and age. In a recent interview with Behindwoods TV, the actor-filmmaker said that the discrimination no longer exists in society, hence directors set such films in the 1980s or 1990s alone. After the backlash, Gautham Vasudev Menon has made a clarification on his comments. Speaking at the recent Bengaluru International Film Festival, he said that his remarks were "blown out of proportion" and that he wants to see such films set in the modern day.
The Vinnaithandi Varuvaya filmmaker clarified that if more films criticise caste-based discrimination, it would add to the cracks that already exist between different social groups because they would support one faction or the other. Gautham, who stated in the earlier interview that his surname does not refer to any caste, reiterated at BIFFes that he treats everyone equally.
As a director, Gautham Vasudev Menon's upcoming projects include the long-gestated Vikram starrer Dhruva Natchathiram. As an actor, he has Jana Nayagan, Vijay's film before his foray into politics, in the pipeline.
