Director Lokesh Kanagaraj's dream project Irumbu Kai Mayavi continues to remain as an active topic of discussion among social media users time and again, especially when one of his projects materialises. Over the years, fans have anticipated some breadcrumbs to be strewn about its making by the filmmaker, but unfortunately, it only continues to remain a distant dream for Lokesh.
Ever since Coolie's announcement was made and Aamir Khan onboarded the project, many netizens had speculated that the Sitaare Zameen Par star would play the titular role in Irumbu Kai Mayavi, a film that was initially written for Suriya.
However, in a recent interview with Gopinath, the Vikram filmmaker refuted these rumours. When probed if he had any interest to explore varied genres in his films, Lokesh replied, "I had, but it never materialised. Irumbu Kai Mayavi was one such film. There is a small issue in that. Everyone has been thinking that I am making that film with Aamir sir. That's not true."
He further added, "I wrote that story 10 years ago. I've used so many important things from that script in my recent films. If I avoid all of them and write it again, it'll be totally different from what I wrote previously. It's a superb action film and Irumbu Kai Mayavi will be a different one from the gangster genre."
Suriya and Lokesh have only collaborated once before. Suriya featured as Rolex, a dreaded, ruthless gangster in a cameo appearance in Kamal Haasan's Vikram. In 2023, Suriya revealed that a spin-off centred around his character, was being planned which was later confirmed by Lokesh.
Lokesh is meanwhile awaiting the release of Coolie, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role. The action film features a star-studded ensemble which includes Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj and Shruti Haasan in lead roles alongside Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy and Kaali Venkat in supporting roles.
The film is slated for a release in theatres worldwide on August 14.
