Speaking about the reason behind choosing to do a rom-com, Vijay Sethupathi said, "Pandiraaj first gave me a gist of the story by narrating the first 20 minutes. Then, he took me through the film scene by scene. The relationship between a man and a woman, typically romance, is a genre that never gets old. You can still make a thousand more stories around it. It’s timeless and always relatable."

Vijay then started speaking about the misunderstandings and conflicts in married life, a theme highlighted by Thalivan Thalaivii. "In a relationship, understanding often begins with a misunderstanding," he said, adding, "Only when we realise we were wrong do we begin to truly understand our partner’s likes and dislikes. If someone refuses to change even a little for the person they love, the relationship won’t last. It’s about embracing both the strengths and flaws of your partner."

He then shared that only a husband and wife can bounce back after an intense fight. "If we fought that way with anyone else, we might never even try to mend the bond. With our partner, there’s no ego or hesitation in admitting fault and apologising."

When asked about how he generally pacifies his wife after a heated argument, he revealed, "After a fight with my wife, if we aren’t talking, I’ll just say, ‘I’m hungry… can you make me something to eat?’ And everything falls back into place. In that moment, I’m telling her, without saying it aloud, that I need her—that I have no one else to go to."

Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen are collaborating for the second time after 19 (1) (a), although the two did not have combination scenes in the film. Thalaivan Thalaivii also stars Yogi Babu, Chemban Vinod Jose, Saravanan, Kaali Venkat, Deepa Shankar, and Roshini Haripriyan, among others. The film is all set to hit theatres on July 25.
