Prime Video announced through a press release that Vetrimaaran's Viduthalai Part 2 will release on the streamer on January 19. The streamer put out a social media post with a still of Soori from Garudan and Vijay Sethupathi from Master with the caption, "imagine these legends in a movie," hinting at the imminent announcement of the Viduthalai sequel. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi, Soori, Manju Warrier, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Anurag Kashyap, Rajiv Menon, and Chetan, among others.
The plot resumes from Viduthalai Part 1, after police arrests Sethupathi's Perumal Vaathiyaar, and charts his life story, including his rise to the top of a political party, as cops transfer him to a different location. Perumal transforms from a schoolteacher to a leader who uses violence first to deal with the evils of the world and later forms an aversion towards violence following a tragic event. Perumal's story deeply influences Kumaresan and other police officers, who find their loyalties sway towards him while their duties as cops cause an internal conflict.
Speaking about the film's streaming release, director Vetrimaaran stated, "I am beyond excited for global audiences to witness this film on Prime Video. With Part 2, we’ve delved even deeper into the story, exploring the complexities of these characters and the world they inhabit. We aimed to showcase the moral and ideological struggles of people fighting for what they believe in while questioning the systemic forces that define their existence." About working with the actors and technicians, Vetrimaaran added, "Collaborating with such an extraordinary cast and crew has been an absolute delight, especially with creative maestros like Ilaiyaraaja whose passion was reflected in every beat of the film’s music."
On the other hand, actor Vijay Sethupathi stated, "Working on Viduthalai has been a deeply transformative experience for me as an actor. Vaathiyar’s character is highly complex, a man who fights for the oppressed, who is committed to remind the world how society was once different, and a leader who is fearless. Adding to it was Vetrimaaran’s commitment to the story and the film, which pushed me to dive deeper into the psyche of Vaathiyar. I hope audiences globally can feel the same emotional and ideological resonance that we experienced during its creation when part 1 and 2 stream on Prime Video."
