Actor Suriya's recent action adventure Kanguva, directed by Siva, has become eligible for Oscars 2025.
This development follows The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announcing that out of 323 films, 207 films made met with the eligibility category. Apart from Kanguva, six other films made the cut: Girls will be Girls, Santosh, All We Imagine as Light, Putul, Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life and Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
The voting for nominations will take place from January 8 to January 15 and the final list will be unveiled on January 17.
Kanguva revolves around Francis Theodore, a bounty hunter in 2024, whose connection with a child is mysteriously connected to a fierce tribal warrior's promise to a child in the year 1070.
Upon its release on November 14, the film received mostly mixed to negative reviews. Our CE review of the film reads, "Kanguva is relentless, and not in a good way. This isn’t momentum; it’s a dizzying, unfocused pace that leaves you queasy and disconnected. The raw emotional strength from Siva’s better work is barely present here. It’s a film that could say so much, but it’s too distracted to stay with any one idea. And here’s the truth: it’s just as hard to feel invested in films where nothing happens as in films where too much seems to be happening."
Apart from Suriya, Kanguva also stars Bobby Deol, Disha Patani, Jagapathi Babu, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Anandaraj, G Marimuthu, Ravi Raghavendra, KS Ravikumar, Ravi Raghavendra, BS Avinash, and Deepa Venkat, among others. The film marked the Tamil debut of Disha Patani and Bobby Deol.
The film is produced by Studio Green and UV Creations. Kanguva features cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy, editing by the late Nishadh Yusuf and art direction by the late Milan Fernandez. Madhan Karky has written dialogues for the film.
