Nearly 21 years after the release of 7G Rainbow Colony, director Selvaraghavan announced on New Year's Day that a sequel to the cult classic is in the works. Selvaraghavan will return to helm the film, which reunites him with the 2004 original's composer Yuvan Shankar Raja. Released in 2004, the romantic drama starred Ravi Krishna and Sonia Agarwal in the lead roles. While Ravi is set to reprise his role as Kadhir from the first film, Anaswara Rajan has been cast as the female lead.
Speaking to CE, producer AM Rathnam shares how 7G Rainbow Colony has acquired a cult status over the years. "The film was a hit in both Tamil and Telugu. Even upon its recent re-release in Telugu, 7G Rainbow Colony had a tremendous reception similar to that of a star film. A 70-year-old man, moved by the story, watched the Tamil film in theatres continuously for 75 days. It came as a big surprise for me. Even today, the film continues to resonate among audiences."
Creating a part two for the film was always on the cards, says the producer, while assuring that they "aren't cashing in on the sequel trend." He explains that the sequel will continue from where the original ended. "Following his girlfriend's death, has Kadhir moved on? Did he get married? What is motivating him to continue his life? The curiosity to know the answers to these questions would draw audiences to theatres once again. I am confident that they would connect with the story, just like how they did with the first part. That is how we have made this as well." He elaborates, "What is interesting will be how we take forward the story from the poetic climax of 7G Rainbow Colony."
The sequel to 7G Rainbow Colony will mark Neru star Anaswara Rajan's third Tamil film after Raangi (2022) and Thugs (2023). The star-studded cast also features Jayaram, along with Suman Shetty and Sudha who are also returning to play their roles as Lakshmi Narayanan (Suman Setty) and Kadhir's mother, respectively. However, Rathnam remains tight-lipped about Sonia Agarwal's comeback for the sequel.
On the technical front, Ramji will crank the camera for 7G Rainbow Colony 2. The film is in its final stages of shooting, and the makers are planning to release it sometime in the second half of 2025.
