First-time director Varsha Bharath's Bad Girl, produced by filmmakers Vetri Maaran and Anurag Kashyap, has bagged the NETPAC Awards at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) 2025.
The NETPAC Award (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) is given annually to a standout feature film from the Asia and Pacific regions. It specifically recognises emerging directors who are just one or two films old. With this recognition, Bad Girl shines the spotlight on Tamil cinema's unique storytelling and filmmaking.
The recently released teaser depicts Anjali, a teenager, navigating emotional turbulence as she yearns to experience life's joys without considering the consequences, a sentiment typical of adolescence. She vows to assert her independence and defy her parents' wishes once she comes of age. The film is expected to revolve around her adventures during adolescence. However, it remains to be seen whether the film will also explore the lessons she learns from these experiences and how they shape her adulthood.
Apart from the lead Anjali Sivaraman, the film also stars Shanthi Priya, Saranya Ravichandran, Hridhu Haroon, TeeJay Arunasalam, and Sashank Bommireddipalli.
The technical crew of Bad Girl comprises cinematographers Preetha Jayaraman (ISC), Jagadeesh Ravi, and Prince Anderson; editor Radha Sridhar; and music composer Amit Trivedi, who is making his Tamil debut with the film. A release date for the film is yet to be announced.
