Director-actor Sasikumar has made an important update about his return to direction. It is worth noting that the Subramaniapuram helmer, in an exclusive conversation with CE last year, had said is returning to filmmaking after a gap of 15 years, since Easan (2010).

In an interview marking the 17th anniversary of his celebrated directorial debut, Subramaniapuram, which gained cult status over the years, he revealed to Sudhir Srinivasan that his upcoming directorial is a historical period drama. He said, "The script is ready, and we will begin shooting next year (2026). To be fully focused on my directorial, I am finishing up all my acting assignments as quick as possible."

For making Subramaniapuram, the director said he walked the lengths and breadths of Madurai for research. For his upcoming film, he said, he has gotten into a reading habit. "Now I am reading a lot of books and equipping myself for my next film," he added.

The kind of success Subramaniapuram enjoyed is unparalleled. The film, upon release, was favourably received by the audiences and critics alike. With its songs, especially 'Kangal Irandal' and comedy scenes, Subramaniapuram satisfied the regular film-goers; with the raw and rustic treatment, the film was lapped up by the arthouse lovers. Notably, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap once said that Subramaniapuram inspired him to make Gangs of Wasseypur.

The period film, set in 80s Madurai, also starred Jai, Samuthirakani, Swathi, and Ganja Karuppu.
