Filmmaker Vishal Venkat, whose upcoming Tamil comedy-drama Bomb stars Arjun Das and Shivathmika Rajashekar in lead roles, revealed at the film’s audio and trailer launch that the unusual premise was sparked by two very different inspirations — one deeply personal and the other rooted in larger societal observations.
“The first is my granddad,” Vishal shared. “He had a habit of waking up at 4.30 in the morning and drinking his coffee. We were used to three familiar sounds — the sipping of hot coffee, him relishing it, and finally gulping it down. But there was always a fourth sound too — his fart.”
The director recalled a poignant moment during his grandfather’s final days. “I was taking him to the restroom once, and he suddenly collapsed. We tried waking him, but he wouldn’t respond. We all assumed he had passed away. Just when I was about to call the doctor, he got up, went to the restroom, and said he was fine. The next day, I overheard him telling my uncle on the phone, ‘I visited God for 15 minutes and came back.’”
His second inspiration came from outside personal experience. “I happened to see some videos from years ago — how children in schools behaved when it came to religion, family or faith, and how they fought over these things. It worried me. That’s when I felt we should make a film about belief. Combining all of this, we created Bomb.”
Clarifying that the film will not hurt anyone’s sentiments, Vishal explained, “Arjun Das plays a character named Manimuthu, who believes his friend is alive. Every character in this story has a belief. It’s about emotions, friends, and how we look at our fellow human beings. Above all, it will underline that only love will last.”
The director further tied the theme to his central metaphor: “The unnecessary air inside a human body is what is released as a fart. In this social system too, there are a lot of unnecessary things. I wanted to say that in a metaphorical way, and that is this Bomb.”
Bomb is directed by Vishal Venkat, who previously directed Sila Nerangalil Sila Manidhargal. He directs the film from a script by Manikandan Mathavan, Abishek Sabarigirison, and himself. Dialogues for the film are written by Makizhnan BM, Manikandan Mathavan, and Abishek Sabarigirison. The film is produced by Sudha Sukumar and Sukumar Balakrishnan, with D Saravana Kumar.
