Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, led by superstar Rajinikanth, continues its strong run at the box office as it enters Day 4. Released on August 14 under the Sun Pictures banner, the action drama has already turned into one of the year’s biggest crowd-pullers.
According to early estimates from trade tracker Sacnilk.com, Coolie collected about ₹35 crore on its first Sunday across all languages in India. This pushes the film’s domestic total to an impressive ₹194.25 crore within just four days of release.
The film opened to a thunderous start on Thursday, raking in ₹65 crore on Day 1, followed by ₹54.75 crore on Friday. On Saturday, collections dropped further to ₹39.5 crore before Sunday brought in another solid ₹35 crore. While the film has witnessed a gradual dip after its historic opening, the numbers remain strong enough to maintain its dominance despite stiff competition from War 2.
An excerpt from CE's review of the film reads, "The reliable Anirudh is effective in most portions, giving the film the right amount of intrigue and massiness, and overcompensates for the contrivances in the narrative when all the cards are laid on the table. For a film that wants to rely more on the emotional journey of a loner coming to terms with loss and longing, Coolie takes too long a time to get there."
Coolie marks Lokesh Kanagaraj’s maiden collaboration with Rajinikanth and his sixth directorial venture overall. The film features a massive ensemble, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, and Rachita Ram. With music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, and editing by Philomin Raj, the film has been positioned as a grand theatrical event.
