As Santhanam's DD Next Level gears up for release, the actor shared about the film and his character in an interview with the popular Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan.
In the interview, the actor said that his character is unique as he plays a reviewer who comments on the films he watches with rap lyrics and the plot will unfold as he gets into trouble when going about his usual business.
The film also features filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon in a pivotal role. The actor said GVM approached him with a comedy script to act in and that was when he said there is a role in DD Next Level which will be perfect for the director. "Gautham sir first hesitated to say that he isn't a perfect fit in a comedy film, but I convinced him to accept the role and it has come out well," said Santhanam.
The upcoming film, directed by Prem Anand, also stars Selvaraghavan, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Geethika, Yashika Aannand, Maaran, Nizhalgal Ravi, Kasthuri Shankar, and Rajendran, among others. Plot details have not been revealed yet, but according to the previously released song 'Kissa 47', Santhanam seems to be playing a film critic dreaded and hated by film producers. In an earlier press note, the director revealed that the film starts on a cruise ship and takes place on an island.
Produced by actor Arya under his banner The Show People, DD Next Level has music composed by OfRo, editing by Barath Vikraman, and cinematography by Dipak Kumar Padhy. The film is co-produced by Niharika Entertainment.
The Dhilluku Dhuddu franchise began in 2016 with the namesake horror comedy, directed by Rambhala. He returned to direct Dhilluku Dhuddu 2, which was released in 2019. A third film, a standalone sequel titled DD Returns, was released in 2023 and was helmed by Prem Anand. All the films were commercial hits at the box office.
DD Next Level will be released in theatres on May 16 in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.
