A bench of the Madras High Court has lifted the interim ban on the re-release of Kamal Haasan's 1991 film Guna.
Guna is a psychological romantic-drama that made a return to popular culture after the usage of the film's song 'Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan' in the Malayalam survival thriller Manjummel Boys, released earlier this year. Despite Guna, directed by Santhana Bharathi and backed by Alamelu Subramaniam, not having an impressive run at the box office, the film gained cult status. The film once again gained interest among the public with the commercial success of the Soubin Shahir and Srinath Bhasi starrer, helmed by Chidambaram.
Guna faced a legal hurdle while being prepared for a re-release, as one Ghanshyam Hemdev claimed to possess the film's copyright and moved the HC to prevent its re-release.
The court's recent ruling has lifted the ban and cleared the decks for the film's re-release. However, the re-release date is not yet revealed.
