Director Siva's latest directorial, Kanguva, has just hit theatres and is receiving mixed reviews. Meanwhile, in a previous conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan, Siva revealed that the Suriya film's CGI was worked upon completely by a team of Indian technicians.
Kanguva is Siva's first directorial that uses computer graphics on a large scale. Speaking about the same, the director said, "No foreign technician has worked on the film's CGI. For example, the crocodile shot that appeared in the film's trailer was also created in India. In fact, it was done in a studio in Virugambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu."
Siva further spoke about the knowledge required for creating CGI that is as competent as Hollywood films. "I think a cinematographer and a director should also have knowledge about CGI. Materials are readily available, and a film crew must only have the interest to acquire knowledge." Siva then said that he learnt a lot from the behind-the-scenes videos of the Avatar films. "The makers of the Avatar films have uploaded videos of how they managed to create the CGi for the film. I patiently watched all the videos and tried to practically apply it with a smaller prototype before we went into production."
Lastly, Siva adviced that filmmakers must brainstorm with technicians about how the CGI would be carried out, much before the film goes on floors. "We must have discussion during the pre-vis stage itself and all teammates must have an idea about how it is going to be executed."
Apart from Suriya, Kanguva also stars Disha Patani, Jagapathi Babu, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Kovai Sarala, Anandaraj, G Marimuthu, Ravi Raghavendra, KS Ravikumar, Ravi Raghavendra, BS Avinash, and Deepa Venkat, among others. The film will mark the Tamil debut of Disha Patani and Bobby Deol.
The fantasy period action film, which will be made in two parts, is expected to traverse across multiple time periods. Produced by Studio Green and UV Creations, Kanguva will feature cinematography by Vetri Palanisamy, editing by the late Nishadh Yusuf, and art direction by the late Milan Fernandez. Dialogues for the film have been written by Madhan Karky. According to reports, the film is expected to be released in 38 languages in 3D and IMAX versions.
