Shankar's vigilante film Indian, starring Kamal Haasan in the lead role, is releasing again in theatres a month ahead of its sequel. Producer AM Rathnam announced that it would release in theatres worldwide in Tamil and Telugu on June 7. The film originally released in theatres worldwide on May 06, 1996.

Indian is about an erstwhile freedom fighter named Senapathy (Kamal Haasan) who fights against corruption. The film stars Kamal Haasan in a dual role, alongside Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Sukanya, Nedumudi Venu, Senthil, Goundamani, and Manorama, among others.

Indian is described as a vigilante film, a theme that Shankar also used in films such as Gentleman and Mudhalvan. Shankar wrote the screenplay for the film and directed it, whereas Sujatha penned its dialogues. It has music by AR Rahman, cinematography by Jeeva, as well as editing by B Lenin and VT Vijayan.

The sequel to the film, Indian 2, also stars Kamal Haasan, alongside Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Aggarwal, Bobby Simha, SJ Suryah, Vivek, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Manobala, and Nedumudi Venu in pivotal roles. It is set to hit theatres on June 12. A third part to the original is also in the pipeline, with Kamal Haasan telling The Hindu earlier this year that its shoot got wrapped.
