Following deaths of over 50 people after consuming hooch in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi, actor Suriya and music composer GV Prakash have registered their condemnation against the state government over the deaths.
Coming heavily against the ruling dispensation, Prakash, in his statement, said, "This tragedy has occurred due to the government's ineptness." He added that no amount of financial assistance can compensate for the death and demanded stringent legislation to prevent such a tragedy in the future.
Actor Suriya issued a strongly worded statement, saying the parties that were ruling the state all these years got the people "addicted" to Rs 150 liquor, and this addiction has led them to choose a cheaper option of Rs 50 spurious liquor if they don't have enough money. He added that the parties aren't keen on implementing the liquor prohibition that they promised in their election manifesto. He urged the local administration to set up a rehabilitation centre in all districts. He hoped that the TN Chief Minister would act in the interest of the people with regards to the prohibition policy.
For the uninformed, tragedy struck in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi on June 19. Several people died consuming spurious liquor sold illicitly in the district's Karunapuram. The death toll kept increasing since then. Cutting across party lines, several leaders have registered their condemnation against the ruling TN government over alleged law and order failure.
Earlier, actor-politician Vijay too condemned the government for its 'negligence.' He urged his party cadre to ensure help reaches the families of the deceased and those who are being admitted to the hospital for treatment instead of holding birthday celebrations.
