Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman recently opened up about a pivotal moment in his early career that reshaped his approach to music. In a candid interview with O2 India, Rahman recalled how a seemingly harsh, drunken remark from a guitarist in his band sparked a profound shift in his artistic journey.
At just 19, Rahman juggled his work with film composers while playing in a band. During one of their sessions in 1985-86, the guitarist, under the influence, bluntly questioned Rahman’s originality, accusing him of simply replicating the styles of the composers he worked with. Though the comment initially unsettled him, Rahman later recognized the uncomfortable truth behind it.
"I realised I was getting influenced by the composers I was playing for," Rahman admitted. “That comment made me reflect deeply. I began distancing myself from those influences, consciously trying to find my own voice.”
The transformative period stretched over seven years as Rahman worked tirelessly to shed external influences and cultivate his distinctive musical style. What began as a jarring critique evolved into a catalyst for his artistic growth, laying the foundation for his now-celebrated sound.
Rahman emphasised the power of unexpected feedback, underscoring how even casual, offhand remarks can ignite significant personal and creative development. “Sometimes, the most important lessons come from the least expected places. It’s not about dismissing what’s said, but about recognising the truth in it,” he reflected.
