Director Bala penned an appreciation post on Kottukkaali, starring Soori and Anna Ben, that was released on Friday.
He wrote that the film's deep story has been made in a grounded and effective manner. He further praised the lead actors, Soori and Anna Ben. He said Soori carried out his role with proper understanding and emoted both placidly and irritably. He also said Anna Ben's performance has justified the film's title.
He wished and appreciated the cast and crew of the film and thanked Sivakarthikeyan for backing the project.
The CE review of the film reads, "For those tuned only to the urgency and impatience of mainstream cinema, the craft of Kottukkaali might feel like it belongs to festival cinema—but it would be grave injustice to box and sideline this powerful, emotional film into a category that is not widely thought of with love."
Kottukkaali marks Soori's second film as a lead, as he debuts as a lead in Vetrimaaran's Viduthalai. For Anna Ben, the film will mark her debut in the Tamil film industry. Sakthi is handling cinematography, while Ganesh Siva is taking care of editing. Soori was last seen in RS Durai Senthilkumar's Garudan, which turned out to be a commercial success and also received positive reviews from critics.
