Kamal Haasan's iconic film Aalavandhan which was released in 2001, is all set for a re-release after 22 years. Producer Kalaipuli S Thanu, who has been teasing the re-release for some time now, announced that the film will hit theatres on December 8. 

It is to be noted that, on the occasion of Kamal Haasan's birthday on November 7, his film Virumaandi was re-released and received a rousing welcome. 

Aalavandhan, directed by Suresh Krissna, is an adaptation of the novel "Dhayam" which was written by Kamal Haasan in 1984. The film stars Haasan in dual roles, with Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai GS Mani and Milind Gunaji in supporting roles. The film was simultaneously shot in Hindi with the title Abhay with three different actors.

Although the film opened to mixed reactions when it was released, it went on to hold a cult status in the years that came, especially among Kamal Haasan fans. It won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects.
