A day after actor and politician Vijayakanth was laid to rest with full state honours, his son and actor Shanmuga Pandian penned an emotional note remembering his father. He took to his Instagram stories, he also posted a photo of his father.

He wrote, “Thank you all for extending your heartfelt condolences. And to the thousands and lakhs of people who showed up to pay their respects standing on roads and bridges, your support shows us the kind of legacy our dad has left behind, the kind of life he has lived and the love he has earned. All your support provides solace to our family as we come to terms with this loss. Rest in peace Dad and our captain.”

Vijayakanth breathed his last on December 28 after suffering for a brief amount of time with respiratory illnesses. He passed away after being diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID-19. He was 71. His mortal remains was kept at island grounds where thousands of people including politicians and film personalities paid respects to him. He was laid to rest at DMDK headquarters at Koyambedu.

A towering presence in Tamil cinema as well as in politics, he is known for films such as Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam, Satham Oru Iruttuarai, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Oomai Vizhigal, Captain Prabhakaran, Chinna Gounder, Ramanaa and Engal Anna. The actor was last seen making a cameo appearance in the 2015 film Sagaptham. He is survived by his wife Premalatha who is now the DMDK secretary and his two sons.
