Kamal Haasan releases remastered version of Hey Ram

Legendary actor Kamal Haasan's period crime drama film, Hey Ram, was released on Youtube in honour of the 77th Independence Day on Tuesday. The film is out on the veteran's youtube channel, Raaj Kamal Films International. Sharing the news through his social media handle, Kamal wrote, "Today, on our country's Independence Day, my ode to Bapu."

Written, directed, and produced by Kamal Haasan, the film also features Shah Rukh Khan in a prominent role along with Kamal. Hey Ram featured an ensemble cast of notable actors, including Hema Malini, Rani Mukerji, Saurabh Shukla, Atul Kulkarni, Girish Karnad, Vaali, Abbas, Nassar, Vasundhara Das, Naseeruddin Shah, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Om Puri. 

Hey Ram tells the story of Saketh Ram (Kamal Haasan). After his wife, Aparna (Rani Mukherji), is molested and killed during riots in Calcutta, he is convinced that Mahatma Gandhi (Naseeruddin Shah) is responsible for all the problems happening in the country and sets out to kill him. The rest of the film shows whether he succeeded in his mission or not. 

Hey Ram, released in theatres nationwide in 2000, went on to grab the attention of the critics despite a dismal run at the box office. The film bagged many accolades, including Best Supporting Actor for Atul Kulkarni and Best Costume Design for Sarika at the 47th National Film Awards.
