Sarathkumar on the Raja Raja Cholan controversy: “How does debating such issues benefit our nation?”

Following Vetrimaaran’s speech at a recent function about Raja Raja Cholan not being a Hindu king, there has been heated debate around the topic. Veteran actor Kamal Haasan backed the filmmaker's point by saying, “Hinduism as we know today did not exist during those times, we had Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Samanam which were later consolidated into one single religion.”

Now, actor-politician Sarathkumar has come out with a statement providing his opinion on the ongoing issue. He says, “Humans evolved from apes but neither do we call ourselves apes. Nor do we call them humans. How does debating such issues benefit our nation?” He further goes on to add, “Just because Tamil Nadu was originally called Madras Presidency, it would not be a valid argument to say this is not Tamil Nadu. What exactly do we gain now by researching whether the egg came first or the chicken came first?”

Sarathkumar disagrees with Vetrimaaran and supporters of his argument. He says, “By looking at who came first and what came first and to decide to reject the new titles and definitions based on that would not be a wise approach.”

The actor then goes on to stress the fact that we should instead be focusing on relevant current issues like global warming, air pollution, degradation of natural resources, pandemics, and the emergence of new viruses. He concludes his statement by saying, “At a time when human settlements on Mars seem like a plausible future, it would be unwise to research what religion Raja Raja Cholan belonged to. It would be better if we instead show the same level of enthusiasm towards taking the glory of Raja Raja Cholan to all corners of the world.”
