Suriya's Soorarai Pottru bags best actor and best film awards at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

The winners of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) was announced earlier today, and Suriya bagged the Best Performance Male award for 2020 hit Soorarai Pottru, while the film won the Best Film award.

Directed by Sudha Kongara, the film also stars Aparna Balamurali, Paresh Rawal, and Urvashi in the lead. The film follows the story of a common man with the big dream of launching a low-cost airline in the 1990s. The Amazon Prime film garnered a huge response from the audience.

By winning the Best Film award, the team wins a URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 from Black Magic Design and a nomination in the Best Asian Film Category in the prestigious Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA Awards).

Speaking about the win, Suriya said, “Sincere thanks first to all the jury members, all the dignitaries, all the organizers. It’s fantastic to be a part of this. Thanks a lot for selecting me and giving me this award. I’m sure all the nominees have given their best, and I have a lot of respect for them. Sorrarai Pottru is very special to me. I would like to say this, maybe I’ve not shared this before. This is the first award for Soorarai Pottru, the first award I’m getting for Soorarai Pottru. Moreover, this is the first film that came during the pandemic. Thanks to all fans and well-wishers. They’ve given us so much love."

Thanking director Sudha Kongara, Suriya said, "In my career, I felt bored with what I was doing after having worked for 20 years. So thanks to my director Sudha. This film was her 10 years’ dream, and she worked for four years on the writing itself. So without Sudha, I’m not Maara (Suriya’s character in the movie). Soorarai Pottru is not without my director Sudha Kongara."

Notably, Soorarai Pottru stands as the third highest-rated movie on IMDb. The film has garnered a rating of 9.1 on the platform.

Meanwhile, Suriya was last seen in Gautham Vasudev Menon's segment Guitar Kambi Mele Nindru in Netflix's anthology Navarasa. His upcoming films are Etharkkum Thunindhavan and Jai Bhim.
