After PM Narendra Modi, producer Sandeep Singh has announced a biopic on Veer Savarkar.

Titled Swantantraveer Savarkar, the film will be directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. It will be shot in London, the Andamans and Maharashtra. The announcement was made on Savarkar's 138th birthday.

“Veer Savarkar is revered and criticized in equal measure,” Sandeep said in a statement. “He has been made into a polarising figure today but I feel that's because people don't know enough."

“While many revere Veer Savarkar for his role in the freedom struggle there are others that decry him for his role in the freedom struggle and the aftermath of that along with the philosophy of Hindutva. But Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's story is one that needs to be told,” the producer added.

Mahesh Manjrekar said he has always been fascinated by Savarkar’s life.“I believe he is a man who didn't get his due in history. The fact that he evokes such strong emotion points to a life that must have impacted so many,” the director stated.

The biopic will be produced by Sandeep Singh, Amit B Wadhwani and co-producer Abhay Verma. Manjrekar is credited as writer with Rishi Virmani.
