When Vivek Oberoi had declined the role of Maya Dolas in Shootout At Lokhandwala

Apoorva Lakhia’s gangster film Shootout At Lokhandwala completes 14 years today. The action drama, based on a real encounter between gangsters and the Mumbai police, was lauded for its powerful cast and performances. Winning much acclaim was Vivek Oberoi’s turn as gangster Mahindra Dolas aka Mayabhai.

Reminiscing about the role, Vivek reveals he’d initially turned down the role of Maya Dolas.

“Some roles and actors are just “meant to be”. Believe it or not, at first, I actually said no to play Maya Dolas in Shootout At Lokhandwala! I had my reservations with the way the character was written at that time,” Vivek shares.

To change his mind, writer-producer Sanjay Gupta and director Apoorva Lakhia asked him how he would want the character to be and how he would visualise it.

“That led to a creative jam session that lasted all night and by morning, I was doing the film!” Vivek recalls.

He now looks back at the film as ‘one of the most awesome fun shoots of my career’.

“The sets were riddled with the sounds of bullets and the boys laughing at some joke or pranks we played and no one was spared! We were a family; we were a “gang”,” says Vivek
