Oscars nominations 2021: Mank, Sound of Metal lead the race

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards. The event, hosted by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas, was streamed live on The Academy’s official website and social media platforms.

David Fincher-directorial Mank led the race with 10 nominations, while Sound of Metal came in second with 7 nominations. Other best picture contenders that received multiple nominations include The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 6 nominations each. Promising Young Woman, which marked the directorial debut of actor Emerald Fennell, received 5 nominations, including the Best Original Screenplay and Best Director nominations for Fenell.

With Nomadland filmmaker Chloé Zhao also being nominated alongside Fennel, this is the first time in Oscar history that two female filmmakers are nominated under the Best Director category.

The White Tiger director Ramin Bahrani received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for the film,  which stars Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra, and Rajkummar Rao. It was widely expected that Adarsh, who recently got a BAFTA nomination, would also make it to the Oscars. However, he failed to make the cut. 

Viola Davis earned her fourth acting nomination for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, making her the most-nominated black actress in Oscar history. In another historical phenomenon, Riz Ahmed earned the Best Actor nomination for his performance in Sound of Metal, making him the first Muslim actor to receive this recognition.

Zhao, meanwhile, became the first Chinese woman and the first woman of color to be nominated for Best Director. She also received nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Adapted Screenplay, taking her total nomination count to 3.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on April 25.
