On Thursday, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asked Netflix India to stop streaming Bombay Begums alleging ‘‘inappropriate portrayal’ of children. The apex body has asked the streamer to furnish a detailed report failing which legal action will be initiated. The NCPCR was reportedly acting on a complaint alleging the series normalises minors indulging in casual sex and drug abuse.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, director Hansal Mehta wrote, “Do these people spend all their time watching OTT shows or do they actually work for Child rights?”

A user responded to Hansal saying, "Well, 'these people' tell me in advance which shows I should not waste my time on. I haven’t even clicked on it once after watching these disgusting clips. Shame on you for being a part of such a depraved industry!"

Hansal shot back, "Shame on you for being you."

Created by Alankrita Shrivastava, Bombay Begums centres on five ambitious women in Mumbai. The show is fronted by Pooja Bhatt, Shahana Goswami, Aadhya Anand, Plabita Borthakur and Amruta Subhash.
