Director Bharathiraja has come out in support of Suriya’s decision to opt for a digital release for his film Soorarai Pottru. The actor's decision has received considerable backlash, with director Hari issuing a statement asking Suriya to reconsider.
In a detailed written statement, Bharathiraja supports Suriya’s decision, saying that one has to adapt to newer technology, “Even though we had resisted cable TV, private channels, DTH etc, we have now adjusted to the same.” He also urged this not be made about a single person, but invited the stakeholders (distributors and exhibitors) for a productive discussion to figure out the best solution.
“For over five months, several in the industry don’t have jobs. Only if producers release their current projects, can they begin on new ones which will bring employment. With the Centre giving permission for film shootings, we have approached the state government for the same. We have also requested permission to open theatres with social distancing guidelines,” he wrote.
Reiterating that a digital release is an option for producers to minimise losses, Bharathiraja also asked why there are no objections for smaller-budget films to directly stream on OTT platforms. “To think films with big stars like Suriya should come to the theatres seems well-intentioned. But will the same efforts be taken for smaller-budget films? There should be freedom for the makers.”
The veteran director, who also recently floated a new body for producers, said that ongoing issues such as high ticket prices, Virtual Print Fee, etc, should also be addressed.
