Mental Hai Kya makers react to release date clash with Super 30

Both the films will hit the theatres on July 26

Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao’s upcoming film, Mental Hai Kya, was slated for release on June 21. However, yesterday, the makers announced that the film has been shifted to July 26. This sparked speculation that they were intending to clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30, which is also scheduled for release on the same date. Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan had a public fallout in 2016, followed by a media standoff in 2017. Earlier this year, Kangana’s directorial debut, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, was also expected to clash with Super 30 (the latter was eventually postponed following sexual harassment allegations against its director, Vikas Bahl).

Issuing a clarification on the matter, producers Balaji Motion Pictures has claimed that the decision to shift the release date of Mental Hai Kya was taken purely for business prospects. “The shift in the release date is a decision taken after recommendations from the distributors, trade analysts, and a top research team, keeping in mind the other releases a week before and after this time,” the statement reads.

The production house also claimed to have assured the other parties that there will be 'no mudslinging'. “On knowing that there is already a movie scheduled for a release on that date, we did everything in our purview to ensure the other parties that there will be no mudslinging and it will be a dignified release,” the statement adds.

Mental Hai Kya is a comic thriller directed by Prakash Kovelamudi and written by Kanika Dhillon. The makers courted controversy last month when the Indian Psychiatric Society raised objections to the film’s title. On the other hand, Super 30 tells the story of mathematician and teacher Anand Kumar, who helped underprivileged students crack Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) entrance exams.
