We had previously reported that James Wan is producing a Mortal Kombat film that will be helmed by debutant director Simon McQuoid. It's now known that actor and martial artist Joe Taslim, best known for his roles in Fast and Furious 6, Star Trek Beyond, and The Raid, has been cast in the reboot.

Based on the classic 90s arcade game, the story revolves around a massive roster of fighters from different realms battling for supremacy in a fictional universe. In the film, Taslim will portray Sub-Zero, a character who fights with ice.

James Wan is producing this reboot, along with Michael Clear, Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein. Greg Russo penned the most recent draft. Paul WS Anderson adapted the game first into the 1995 film, Mortal Kombat, which was followed by a sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, which released in 1997. The original game franchise has sold more than 49 million copies, and its latest release, Mortal Kombat 11, has also garnered rave reviews.

Pre-production on this latest Mortal Kombat movie is still underway, with filming planned to take place in Adelaide, South Australia. The film is expected to hit screens in 2021.
