Keerthy Suresh, who was honoured with the Best Actress award in the National Film Awards 2019 for Mahanati, says she is happy to be recognised for the prestigious honour. "I never expected this award and I have mixed feelings. I am feeling really special, and as an actor, I have made my parents proud today. Apart from me, Mahanati team has won two more awards, and it's a great moment for all of us. This award is a memorable recognition for me and my film, and such an honour brings in more responsibility as an actor," says Keerthy.

The 26-year-old actor carried the entire film,  a biopic on legendary actor Savitri, on her shoulders with a compelling performance. Interestingly, she was apprehensive to reprise Savitri's character as she has never done such a strong character. "I don't know what made Nag Ashwin approach me to play Savitri's part. Even though I liked the script, I wasn't sure whether I could do justice to this legendary character. But, Nag Ashwin had faith in me and he was really supportive throughout the shooting. Once I saw the response to the first look poster and teaser, I was a little confident and relieved. Savitri is a legend and without my director and team's help this (honour) is not possible," she explains.

Ask her how she is celebrating this moment, Keerthy shares, "I am in Kerala and cherishing this moment with my parents and family. It feels good to receive compliments from everyone that I deserve this award. I am watching the news and presently, I am not thinking too much about what I should be doing next and just trying to enjoy the moment."
