Rohit Shetty-Ranveer Singh release the trailer of Simmba in Mumbai

The trailer of Rohit Shetty’s latest cop-actioner, Simmba, was launched in Mumbai today. A remake of the 2015 Telugu hit Temper, the film stars Ranveer Singh in the titular role of Simmba — an orphaned boy who grows up to be a corrupt cop, but is reformed after taking on a brutal rape case. Co-produced by Dharma Productions, Simmba extends Rohit’s popular Singham franchise, and features an extended cameo by Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham. The film marks the second Bollywood outing of Sara Ali Khan, who is debuting with Abhishek Kapoor’s Kedarnath on December 7.

Speaking about the popularity of cop dramas in mainstream Hindi cinema, Rohit said at the launch, “I believe for a good cop film to work it must tackle real issues that are relevant to its time. If you see the cop movies of the 70s, they were based on problems our society was dealing with back then. Singham, too, addressed an important topic, and so does Simmba, which is about something (rape) that the whole country is dealing with at the moment.”

Ranveer dubbed the experience of working with Rohit Shetty, 'a dream come true', adding that he is a big fan of Ajay Devgn and the Singham franchise. “I remember watching Singham with my friends in Chandan cinemas. It was an exhilarating mass experience, with people whistling, clapping and dancing in the aisles. Since then, I had this dream of playing a lead role in a Rohit Shetty film. It's something I have been trying to do for a long time. Rohit does not work with everybody and you must really earn your stripes to be a Rohit Shetty hero. I feel lucky and honoured to have finally realised my dream.”

Asked if there are plans of extending Simmba into a franchise, Karan Johar replied, “I think Rohit Shetty’s real name is ‘Rohit Franchise Shetty’. He has a magical way of turning everything into a popular franchise. So yes, as a producer it would be a no-brainer to make more Simmba films.”

Karan also feels the Rohit and Ranveer duo will be a blockbuster combination. “Rohit Shetty-Ranveer Singh's combination is irresistible. I can assure you Rohit will not be able to work without Ranveer. It's going to be a combination that will not go away for a long time.”

The extended cast of Simmba includes Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana, Prakash Raj, Vrajesh Hirjee and Siddhartha Jadhav. The soundtrack is composed by Tanishk Bagchi, Lijo George and DJ Chetas. The 90s hit Aankh Maare Ladka Aankh Maare from Tere Mere Sapne has been remixed for the film. Besides characters from the Singham franchise, Simmba will also feature appearances from actors in the Golmaal films, including Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Kunal Keemu and Shreyas Talpade.
