Memorable female movie assassins who wreaked havoc on the screen
Whenever the subject of assassins come up, the names usually brought up are those of male characters. But what about the women? We take a look at the female movie assassins who wreaked havoc on-screen
1. Directed by David Leitch, the Cold War-era thriller, Atomic Blonde, is one of the most stunningly shot and choreographed action entertainers of the 21st century.
Charlize Theron's Lorraine Broughton in Atomic Blonde gets into car crashes, vicious fist-fights, and furious gun battles and still comes out in one piece.
2. In Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino, in his usual fashion, pays homage to a variety of genres, including anime and chanbara (Japanese samurai thrillers)
The Bride, played by Uma Thurman, annihilates her opponents in spectacularly brutal fashion. In one sequence, she takes on multiple hitmen and paints a nightclub red with her blade.
3. La Femme Nikita -Four years before his relatively more celebrated assassin story Leon the Professional, Luc Besson made La Femme Nikita, which featured a conflicted a female protagonist.
The female lead is forced to become an assassin after a misguided decision results in terrible consequences in La Femme Nikita.
4. The Long Kiss Goodnight has a female spy, played by Geena Davis, who is sort of like the female version of Jason Bourne. In the film, we see Geena with two get-ups and dual identities.
When Samuel Jackson's character is introduced, the film is fuelled by the right amount of wit to supplant its adrenaline-pumping action.
5. Korean thriller The Villainess has enough body count and insane fight sequences to rival anything found in Atomic Blonde, The Raid or any of the John Wick films.
One of the highlights is a crazy swordfight among three motorcycle riders that influenced a similar sequence in the last John Wick film, Parabellum.
