Sathi Leelavathi, penned by Kamal Haasan's mentor, Ananthu, was inspired from the 1989 Hollywood film, She-Devil, starring Meryl Streep.
The film was co-written by Kamal Haasan, along with veteran director Balu Mahandra, who also helmed the film.
Magie was the art director, while Balu Mahendra was also editor and cinematographer for the film.
Kovai Sarala was signed to portray the role of Palani after great debate. While Kamal Haasan wanted her in the film, Balu Mahendra was hesitant.
Kamal Haasan waited for Sarala for six months and brought her on board the film.
Sarala later said that Mahendra was delighted that she was part of the film and that he felt bad for initially having doubts in her ability.
Kamal Haasan speaks Kongu Tamil (Coimbatore Tamil) in the film, which he was said to have learned from Kovai Sarala.
Kovai Sarala won Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian award for the film.
The film, which released along with Rajinikanth's Baasha, was a commercial success and completed a 150 day run in many theatres in TN.
The film was remade by David Dhawan in Hindi as Biwi No.1 (1999).
Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor, and Tapu played the roles of Ramesh Arvind, Kamal Haasan, Kalpana, and Kovai Sarala.
The film was remade by Ramesh Aravind himself in Kannada as Rama Shama Bhama (2005). Ramesh and Kamal reprised their roles.
The film became a profitable venture for the producers.
Here are a few more nostalgic snapshots and rare paper-ads from the delightful film...
