A few weeks ago, the makers of Freedom at Midnight had announced January 9 as the premiere date for its second season. On Monday, the official trailer of the upcoming season, which will be streaming on SonyLIV, was unveiled.

Helmed by Nikkhil Advani, season 2 of Freedom at Midnight promises to capture the complex and murky aftermath of India’s independence, which included bottomless series of bureaucratic talks, political machiavellan on all ends as the leaders decided the terms for partition, negotiations with over 500 princely states, and millions of Indians who suffered the most amidst all the mayhem.

The series is based on the acclaimed book of the same name by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins. Produced by Emmay Entertainment in association with StudioNext, the series has many names in the writing name like Abhinandan Gupta, Adwitiya Kareng Das, Gundeep Kaur, Divya Nidhi Sharma, Revanta Sarabhai, and Ethan Taylor. Meanwhile, Nikkhil Advani is both the showrunner and director for the show.

Season 2 of Freedom at Midnight gets streaming date

Many prominent cast members from the first season will reprise their roles — While Sidhant Gupta will be seen as Jawahar Lal Nehru, other primary cast members for season 2 include Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi, Rajendra Chawla as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Luke McGibney as Lord Mountbatten, Arif Zakaria as Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and Ira Dubey as Fatima Jinnah. Other key cast members include KC Shankar, RJ Malishka, Rajesh Kumar, Luke McGibney, Andrew Cullum, Richard Teverson, Alistair Finlay, and Cordelia Bugeja. The first season of the historical-drama series, which released in November 2024, opened to rave reviews.

Besides Hindi, the show will be available for streaming in 7 other languages — English, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, and Kannada.
