
Streamer Netflix, on Thursday, announced the release date of the third season of the globally celebrated South Korean dystopian survival thriller series Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Netflix has eyed June 27 this year to stream the final season of the series, which features economically weak people being preyed upon by a syndicate to play a set of games, losing which could result in death, by alluring them with a chance of winning a fortune upon completing all the games.
In season 2, Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun had returned as Seong Gi-hun and Front Man, respectively. The cast also includes Im Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun, as well as Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an. In this season, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport for which he takes the help of police detective Hwang Jun-ho, played by Wi Ha-joon. For this, he voluntarily enters the competition once again. This time he is well prepared and inserts a tracker chip in an artificial tooth to expose this mysterious island. The seven-episode second season ended on a cliffhanger with Cheol Su, a new robot character, making a surprise appearance.
The original Squid Game series, which was released in 2021, was Netflix’s most popular show of all time. It told the story of a divorced father and gambler (Lee Jung-Jae) who joins a secret competition with 456 total players. But the losers of each round are executed in the survival game until one victor remains and takes home the cash prize. The nine-episode series won three Golden Globe Awards and received 14 Emmy nominations with six wins.
