
Even as Squid Game 2 continues to be streamed by millions of users since its release a week go, Netflix has confirmed that the third and final season will hit the streamer this year.
Netflix also shared a teaser poster for the third season of the series. The poster showcases Young Hee, the iconic figure from the Red Light, Green Light game, alongside a new robot character, Cheol Su, who made an unexpected appearance in the post-credits scene of Season 2’s finale.
Series creator, director, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that that the battle between Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), the mysterious puppet master, will continue through the new season as season 2 ends with just seven episodes with a major cliffhanger towards the end.
In season 2, Lee Jung-jae and Lee Byung-hun had returned as Seong Gi-hun and Front Man, respectively. The cast also includes Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-hoon and Yang Dong-geun as well as Park Gyu-young, Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won and Won Ji-an. In this season, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport. For this, he voluntarily enters the competition once again. With season 3's release confirmed, Netflix has also quashed rumours about Leonardo DiCaprio being cast in the highly-rated show. A representative of Netflix reportedly said, “The rumours are completely false. Reports of Leonardo DiCaprio’s involvement in Squid Game Season 3 are entirely unfounded.”
Along with Hwang, Kim Ji-yeon also serves as an executive producer on the show.
The original Squid Game series which was released in 2021, was Netflix’s most popular show of all time. It told the story of a divorced father and gambler (Lee Jung-Jae) who joins a secret competition with 456 total players. But the losers of each round are executed in the survival game until one victor remains and takes home the cash prize. The nine-episode series won three Golden Globe Awards, and received 14 Emmy nominations with six wins.
In 2023, the streamer came up with Squid Game: The Challenge which was similar to the show where participants took part in the games that were showcased on the series. Hwang had also worked with Netflix to create a mockumentary inspired by Squid Game's success, titled The Best Show on the Planet. There is also a video game in the making. Moreover, it has also been confirmed that acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher will be directing an English adaptation of the show for the streaming giant.
