
Disney's Young Woman and the Sea, which is based on the true story of Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle, is coming to Disney + on July 19. Directed by Joachim Rønning from a script by Jeff Nathanson, the film had a limited theatrical release on May 31. The film stars Daisy Ridley in the lead role as Ederle.
The story chronicles the daring journey of the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel. Ederle made the 21-mile swim from France to England in 1926. The daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan, Ederle was a competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics when she decided to attempt crossing the channel.
Young Woman and the Sea also stars Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Stephen Graham, Kim Bodnia, Christopher Eccleston, and Glenn Fleshler. The film is based on the book Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World by Glenn Stout. The producers are Jerry Bruckheimer, Chad Oman, and Jeff Nathanson, with John G. Scotti, Daisy Ridley, and Joachim Rønning serving as executive producers.
