Critically acclaimed Apple TV+ shows like Severance, new seasons of Bad Sisters and Shrinking as the platform is set to go subscription-free for the first weekend of January in a global promotion. The streaming service will be free from January 3 to 5 when Apple TV+ is available, to anyone with an Apple ID.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening, the streamer wrote, "This weekend, see for yourself. Stream for free Jan 4-5."
Acclaimed Golden Globe nominees such as Slow Horses and Disclaimer, along with award-winning hits like The Morning Show and Ted Lasso, will also be available. Other shows, including Dark Matter, For All Mankind, and Foundation, will also be accessible for free. Additionally, films, like Fly Me to the Moon, The Family Plan, Wolfs, and The Instigators, will be part of the offering.
The approach is similar to the free weekends once provided by premium cable channels during cable TV's peak era. In recent years, other streaming platforms, such as Netflix, have implemented comparable free access promotions.
Apple TV+ debuted in November 2019, though Apple has not revealed specific subscriber counts, opting to share data for its overall services division instead. Beyond contributing to the broader services sector, Apple TV+ plays a key role in driving viewership on Apple TV, the company’s established streaming hub. Even without a subscription to Apple TV+, users can access rental, purchase, or subscription content through Apple TV. Additionally, the platform has made certain sports programming available for free as part of its investment in live broadcasting rights.
