Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies will be released on Netflix on April 26, the makers announced on Thursday. The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan and Chhaya Kadam in pivotal roles.
The film follows the story of a recently married Deepak Kumar, who goes home with his bride. However, as soon as she pulls the cover off her face, it is revealed that she is not the same girl he had married. Faced with a huge dilemma, Deepak goes to the police station to lodge a complaint about his missing wife.
It is based on a story by Biplab Goswami, and the screenplay and dialogues are written by Sneha Desai. The film’s additional dialogues have been penned by Divyanidhi Sharma.
The film had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 where it received a standing ovation.
Presented by Jio Studios, Laapataa Ladies is produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. It was released in theatres on March 1 and was appreciated by critics who praised the screenplay, performances and Rao’s direction.
Our CE review of the film read, "Laapataa Ladies is set in villages but is not necessarily a rural tale. Its themes are more universal. Rao’s direction has an ease and the film’s storytelling is as soothing as a tale told by a grandparent. She ably captures the sluggishness of village life. The tongue-in-cheek humour is fun and the film fares well on situational comedy."
