The 1994 classic Thenmavin Kombathu, which was set for rerelease on October 1, has now been pushed to a week on October 8. The film will return to the big screen in a 4K Dolby Atmos format, more than three decades after its original release.
The restoration is a joint effort by Prasad Corporation and Matinee Now. The original 35mm negatives were scanned in 8K and digitally restored to Super 4K. The film has also received a new Dolby Atmos mix.
Directed by Priyadarshan, Thenmavin Kombathu stars Mohanlal, Shobana and Nedumudi Venu as the leads. Set in a fictional rural setting, it follows Sreekrishnan and Manikyan, two friends whose bond is tested when they fall for the same woman, Karthumbi.
The film also features several of Priyadarshan’s regular collaborators, including Sreenivasan, Pappu, Sukumari, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and KPAC Lalitha.
A massive box office blockbuster and an integral part of Malayali pop culture, Thenmavin Kombathu was also critically acclaimed, winning two National Film Awards and won five Kerala State Film Awards. It was also later remade and adapted in several languages.
