Kalyani Priyadarshan has congratulated the team of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit (BKU) on the Nivin Pauly-Mamitha Baiju starrer's record-breaking box office run, highlighting the strength of family audiences in driving theatrical success. The Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra actor took to her Instagram Stories on Wednesday, reposting a statement by Nivin from an interview with Variety, in which the actor said, “If families like a film, ticket sales soar.”
Sharing the quote, Kalyani wrote, “THIS. My favourite part about BKU breaking all box-office records is that it proves the strength of family audiences, at a time when there's been a belief that only big action spectacles can deliver these numbers. Congratulations to the entire team of BKU. You deserve this beautiful win.”
Directed by Girish AD, the romantic comedy exploring an age gap romance hit theatres on August 21 as an Onam release and has gone on to register a remarkable theatrical run. According to Sacnilk.com, BKU has grossed Rs 310.55 crore worldwide in 26 days. The film crossed the Rs 300-crore mark on its 24th day, overtaking Lokah to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time worldwide.
BKU’s success has also been notable for the scale of its performance in Kerala. The film recently overtook Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film in the state.
Following Lokah, Kalyani is currently working on the Ranveer Singh-starrer Pralay, which marks her debut in Bollywood. She also has a Tamil film, directed by debutant Thiraviyam SN, in the pipeline.
