Unni Mukundan has been roped in to voice the iconic superhero He-Man in the official Malayalam version of the upcoming live-action fantasy film Masters of the Universe, slated for a theatrical release on June 5. The announcement was made alongside the unveiling of the film’s Malayalam trailer.
With the project, Unni also becomes the first Malayalam actor to collaborate with Hollywood studios Sony Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on a major international production.
Sharing the news on social media, the Marco actor described the opportunity as an emotional full-circle moment. Recalling his childhood admiration for the legendary character, Unni wrote, “As a 90’s kid, He-Man was never just a character to me… he was strength, courage and heroism itself.”
The actor added that dubbing for the film turned into a deeply personal experience, especially while delivering the character’s iconic catchphrase: “By the Power of Grayskull… I Have The Power!”
“Standing inside the dubbing studio and saying… ‘Ente ullilulla aa shakthi koodi vaa!’ was deeply emotional and surreal. For a moment, I wasn’t an actor anymore… I was that little boy again, lost in the magic of He-Man,” he wrote.
Directed by Travis Knight, Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man / Prince Adam and Jared Leto as Skeletor. The film is based on Mattel’s globally popular franchise that gained cult status through comic books and animated television adaptations.
Unni, who was last seen in the romantic drama Mindiyum Paranjum, is currently headlining a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi titled Maa Vande. The upcoming film is written and directed by Telugu filmmaker Kranthi Kumar CH.
