Mohanlal's 1989 classic Kireedam is set for rerelease this June. Though the makers are yet to confirm a specific date, the film will return  in an upgraded 4K format.

Kireedam, directed by Sibi Malayil and written by AK Lohithadas, is one of the most celebrated Malayalam films of all time for its powerful writing and some memorable performances. The film tells the story of a police constable father (Thilakan) whose dream of making his son (Mohanlal) an inspector gets shattered overnight after a clash with a local gangster (Mohan Raj).

Lohithadas' writing explores how the lives of an ordinary young man and his family are upended by unforeseen circumstances and society's role in typecasting individuals.

Mohanlal's performance in it earned him a Special Mention at the National Film Awards, while MG Sreekumar won a State Award for his rendering of the iconic song, ‘Kaneer Poovinte’.

Kireedam was later remade in six other languages, with a sequel titled Chenkol also made in 1993.
