The much-awaited trailer of Kathanar, starring Jayasurya, was unveiled on Tuesday, and it more than lives up to the mounting hype. Inspired by the tales of Kadamattathu Kathanar, a priest believed to possess supernatural powers, the film promises a reimagining that breaks away from earlier popular adaptations. The visual grandeur, expansive world-building, and sheer ambition seen in the trailer are not something usually associated with a Malayalam film.
With this 2.58-minute trailer, director Rojin Thomas, best known for Home, offers the audience a sneak peek into a richly imagined fantasy world rooted in myth and magic. Alongside Jayasurya, the trailer features Anushka Shetty in a pivotal role, with glimpses of the supporting cast including Prabhu Deva, Harish Uthaman, Vineeth, Devika Sanjay, and Nitish Bharadwaj.
The film is scripted by Rojin Thomas along with debutant R Ramanand, with the former also handling editing and VFX direction. The technical crew includes cinematographer Neil D Cunha, action choreographers Jungjin Park and Kalai Kingson, composer Rahul Subrahmanian Unni, and production designer Rajeevan
Backed by Sree Gokulam Movies, Kathanar is billed as one of the most ambitious films ever mounted in Malayalam cinema. The makers have announced a monsoon release, though an exact date is yet to be revealed.
