C Premkumar's Meiyazhagan, starring Karthi and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles, is one of Tamil cinema's best feel-good films of recent times. The film has fans not just in Tamil Nadu but in Kerala as well. At some level, the audience in the state has a desire to see a remake of the film or a movie along those lines featuring Malayalam stars. For example, perhaps this is why AI-generated Meiyazhagan images, featuring Nivin Pauly and Mohanlal in place of Karthi and Arvind Swamy, caught the attention of Nivin.
Saying that he has seen the said images, the actor opened up about the prospect of acting in a Malayalam film that is similar to Meiyazhagan and that co-stars Mohanlal. "We have talked about doing an entertainer together, but we have not yet found the right subject or writer and director for that matter," Nivin said at the recent JFW Movie Awards function. "We are waiting for those factors to fall into place. Hopefully, the project materialises," Nivin added.
For the uninitiated, Meiyazhagan tells the story of a middle-aged adult (Arvind Swamy) who goes back to his homeland after a long time for his cousin sister's marriage. The trip brings him back together with his family, especially his cousin brother (Karthi) who admires him like a big brother, despite his prolonged absence from his life.
Meiyazhagan released in September 2024 and earned critical acclaim and 51 crore at the global box office, according to data from the industry tracker Sacnilk.
Coming back to Nivin Pauly, the actor has already starred in a film alongside Mohanlal—2018's Kayamkulam Kochunni, directed by Rosshan Andrrews. In the film, Nivin portrayed the Robin Hood-like titular character, and Mohanlal played his ally Ithikkara Pakki.
As Nivin and Mohanlal are known for their feel-good dramas, fans are excited about the prospect of watching them together onscreen in a film such as the C Premkumar directorial.
