Veteran actor Urvashi is set to headline Kannada filmmaker Gurudatha Ganiga’s debut Malayalam venture, according to a recent report in The Times of India. The yet-to-be-titled film is expected to go on floors shortly. Gurudatha, who made his directorial debut with the 2018 film Ambi Ning Vysaitho and served as the creative director of Bangalore Boys, is backing the upcoming project and views it as a natural step, given the increasing prevalence of cross-industry collaborations in Indian cinema. He noted that the current “pan India culture” has enabled directors and artistes to work across linguistic borders, and said the timing felt right for such a collaboration.

The director shared that he came on board after being impressed by the script written by Vishnu Satheeshan. Describing it as “one of the most innocent stories” he has heard in a long time, Gurudatha said the film centres on the relationship between a mother and her son, a theme he believes is rarely explored with such simplicity.

Further details about the cast and crew are currently under wraps. Meanwhile, Gurudatha’s upcoming release is the Kannada film Karavali, starring Prajwal Devaraj, Raj B Shetty and Sushmitha Bhat. He is also working on the film adaptation of the Kannada novel Jugaari Cross, led by Raj B Shetty in the lead.

Urvashi's upcoming slate also includes Aasha, co-starring Joju George in the lead, Paablo Paarty, alongside her daughter Teja Lakshmi, and Pandiraj's upcoming Tamil film, which reunites her with Jayaram.
