After its release on February 27, Friday, director Krishand's science-fiction film Masthishka Maranam, starring Rajisha Vijayan, has earned mostly positive reviews from critics across the country. However, the same positive feedback is yet to translate into big bucks at the box office.
According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has earned 1.92 crore from theatres in India so far. The box office collection has remained steady for the non-weekend day, Monday, at 37 lakh. Notably, on Friday, its release day, too, the film earned a collection of 38 lakh. Meanwhile, on the two weekend days, it minted 55 lakh each. It is worth noting that these are approximate numbers.
Set in a dystopian period, Kochi 2046, Masthishka Maranam follows a father who, while grieving the death of his daughter, enters a VR-based memory game in the black market as a way of dealing with his loss. However, in the process, he discovers a dark piece of information concerning a superstar by chance.
The cast also includes Divya Prabha, Niranj Maniyanpilla Raju, Vishnu Agasthya, Rahul Rajagopal, Ann Saleem, Santhy Balachandran, Suresh Krishna, and Jagadish, among others.
In our review, Vivek Santhosh wrote, "What this film keeps circling back to, without ever quite landing, is the question of whether anything actually belongs to anyone anymore in a world where the cost of memory itself has a price tag. Masthishka Maranam doesn’t pretend to have any answers. But it asks the question with enough imagination, anger, and humour that you leave feeling glad that it did." This review also made note of the contentious special number that features Rajisha Vijayan, saying it "comes with real contextual significance".
