Director Chidambaram's film Balan: The Boy continues its successful start at the box office. On the fourth day of its release, it earned a gross collection of 1.12 crore from theatres, according to data from the tracker Sacnilk. This takes the worldwide box office collection for the film to 17.53 crore as of Monday. It is worth noting that the tracker is yet to release Balan: The Boy box office collection data for Tuesday, the fifth day of its release.
Interestingly, the film has minted around the same amount in India and in overseas markets, going by Sacnilk's data. The tracker reports that it has earned 9.53 crore from theatres in India and 8.22 crore overseas. The numbers are indicative of the growing appeal of Malayalam cinema beyond the home turf.
The film follows a woman and her son, who are bound by sheer love, safeguarded by lies, and set apart by fate. The two must deal with the secrets about their past lives in an intense quest for truth and redemption. It stars Adhisheshan as the titular boy and Farzana Palathingal as his mother. The cast also includes Muhammed Zinaan, Dolly June, Jean Paul Lal, Beena Antony, Tovino Thomas, Premalu fame filmmaker Girish AD, and so on.
If the early box office numbers are anything to go by, Balan: The Boy is on course to mark a hat-trick of successes for Chidambaram at the box office. His previous two directorial ventures, namely Jan E Man and Manjummel Boys, are also commercially successful outings.
The film has been receiving much appreciation from the South Indian film industry, in addition to the general audience. Before its release, director Priyadarshan praised it, calling it the best year of the last two years in Malayalam cinema. More recently, Radikaa Sarathkumar also commended it.
