Actor Tovino Thomas has come on board as a co-producer of his upcoming film Munpe, directed by editor-turned-filmmaker Saiju Sreedharan. The project is also being backed by Panorama Studios, the Bollywood-based production house that recently ventured into Malayalam cinema, along with Dolwin Kuriakose's Theatre of Dreams, which previously produced Tovino's Anweshippin Kandethum.
The makers recently issued a casting call seeking freshers between the ages of 25 and 30 who are fluent in Malayalam for the film's female lead role.
Munpe was first announced in 2024 on Tovino's 35th birthday. Along with the announcement, the team unveiled a motion poster featuring Tovino standing inside a cosmic wormhole with his arms outstretched, while a woman falls into its depths.
Describing the film as "an intense, fantastical love story that is out of this world," Tovino wrote, "To what extent will you go to get back the one you lost? Get ready to plunge into the depths of Munpe."
Munpe is written by Tina Thomas, while Saiju also serves as its editor. Noted for his work on acclaimed films such as Mayaanadhi, Kumbalangi Nights, and Anjaam Pathiraa, Saiju made his directorial debut in 2024 with the found-footage thriller Footage.
Meanwhile, Tovino's Athiradi, co-starring Basil Joseph and Vineeth Sreenivasan, is set to begin streaming on Sony LIV from June 19.
