The passing of veteran actor Salim Kumar has left Kerala's political and cultural spheres in mourning, with Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan and actor Mohanlal leading the tributes to the National Award-winning performer.
The condolences carry added poignancy as Salim Kumar's last public appearance came only days ago at a function organised to felicitate Satheesan following his appointment as Chief Minister. Mohanlal was among the guests at the event, which also saw Salim Kumar share the stage with his son, actor Chandu Salimkumar.
A long-time supporter of the Congress party and an outspoken critic of the Left, Salim Kumar was known for never concealing his political convictions. In a heartfelt social media post, Satheesan remembered the actor not merely as a celebrated artist but as someone with whom he shared a deep personal bond. "Salim Kumar was not merely the Manavalan of laughter for me. He and I shared an intensely close personal relationship," wrote Satheesan.
Calling the late actor "the pride of my homeland", the Chief Minister praised his unwavering political convictions and courage in expressing them publicly. "He was a brave artist who was never afraid to say, "I am a Congressman." Without giving the slightest thought to personal losses, he would repeatedly affirm the firmness of his political stand," Satheesan said.
Recalling Salim Kumar's involvement in his election campaigns over the years, Satheesan added that the actor would insist on inaugurating his election committee offices and would celebrate the party's victories like a family member. The Chief Minister also reflected on Salim Kumar's artistic legacy, noting that he had repeatedly demonstrated that his talents extended far beyond comedy. "When one side of his face spread laughter, the other carried the moisture of tears into our hearts. Malayalam cinema has lost a genius, and I have lost my own brother," he wrote.
The actor also recalled Salim Kumar's generosity and warmth towards others. "He was a man of innocent affection who always helped others and embraced them like brothers," Mohanlal said. Having shared screen space with Salim Kumar in several films across decades, Mohanlal noted that their friendship extended beyond cinema. "I had the opportunity to act alongside him in many films. Salim Kumar was also a good friend of mine, both inside and outside the cinema," he wrote. Mohanlal further praised the actor's social awareness and willingness to speak openly on public issues. "He always possessed the civic consciousness to observe social issues and express his opinions openly. Heartfelt condolences to my dear friend," the actor added.
Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night at the age of 56 following a series of health complications. Widely regarded as one of Malayalam cinema's finest performers, he leaves behind a legacy spanning comedy, drama, writing and filmmaking, as well as an unmistakable presence in Kerala's public life.
